Paul W.S. Anderson is penning and will produce the second installment of summer's surprise hit, the vidgame-based "Resident Evil."

Pic grossed $40 million in North America through Screen Gems and passed the $100 million mark at the international box office. Sequel's production will start in the first half of 2003, Germany's Constantin Film said Thursday.

Original pic was written, directed and produced by Anderson. It's not decided if he'll direct the sequel. Constantin, in partnership with Samuel Hadida of France's Metropolitan Film, also will finance the second film.

Anderson and his producing partner, Jeremy Bolt, will produce the film through their Impact Pictures, which is 51% owned by Constantin.

The $30 million-budgeted "Resident Evil" was financed without a North American deal. Intermedia handled foreign sales, while Sony's Screen Gems picked up North American rights for no advance but a significant P&A commitment as well as taking Italy and Latin America.__________________________________________________________

Anderson talks about Resident Evil 2: Nemesis

ARROW: So let's move on to Resident Evil 2.

PAUL: Electric Boogaloo.

ARROW: You bet Electric Boogaloo! You just finished writing the screenplay?

PAUL: Yes…

ARROW: Do you have any casting ideas, there was a Mira Sorvino rumor floating around recently.

PAUL: We haven't approached any cast for it yet, although they're a couple of people from the first one that we would like to return.

ARROW: Will the sequel be a bit like what ALIENS was to ALIEN? More of everything?

PAUL: Yes, it's definitely more of a fully loaded action movie. Where the first one was sort of claustrophobic horror, Nemesis will be a lot more expansive. Nemesis will take place in one night in Raccoon City after its been overruled with the undead. You have a group of survivors fighting for their lives and trying to get out of the city.

ARROW: Is Milla returning? I assumed that she would.

PAUL: We would like her to return, yes. And it will also feature characters from the Resident Evil Nemesis game.

ARROW: Nemesis will be played by Eric Mabius right?

PAUL: Yes, that's the idea...at the end of the first movie he becomes the Nemesis.

ARROW: So he mutates.

PAUL: Yes, he becomes the main villain of the second feature.

ARROW: Are you aiming for a trilogy with the Resident Evil series?

PAUL: Yes, I would like that. I've got the idea for the 3 movies mapped out already, they were always in the back of my mind. Now that the first movie did the business it did, the trilogy might become a reality.

Paul Anderson, who wrote, directed, and produced, Resident Evil, will return again to write and produce, but there's no word if he'll direct. Production for the film will begin in the first half of 2003.

Empire Online talked to Resident Evil director, Paul Anderson, about the upcoming sequel and here's what he had to say...

" I'm still writing the script at the moment, that won't go into production till next year. The sequel will be Nemesis and it will be set during the same time period as the Nemesis game [partly before and partly after the initial zombie encounter]. So it will be survivors from the movie meet survivors from the video game. "

" We're going to introduce Jill Valentine and Carlos Oliveira from the game and a few little surprises as well. Of course there's the Nemesis himself too, the big dude. "

Paul Anderson has announced he is busy working on a script for Resident Evil 2 with a start date planned for the first half of 2003. He has not yet decided if he will direct the movie.
Anderson has mentioned both Natasha Henstridge and Mira Sorvino as possible actresses he'd like to cast in the role of Jill Valentine.
