La película está dirigida por el director de culto japonés Takashi Shimizu (autor de la exitosa película de terror nipona The Grudge-La Maldición-.

"Somehow, in the midst of turning his hit JU-ON movies into the upcoming U.S. film THE GRUDGE, director Takashi Shimizu found the time to helm another fright feature, MAREBITO. The digital-video production stars fellow Japanese genre filmmaker Shinya (TETSUO) Tsukamoto as Masuoka, a cameraman fascinated by fear who becomes obsessed with a man who has bloodily killed himself on a subway. His investigation leads him to discover an underworld full of supernatural creatures and to become involved with a girl who may be a creature of the night. Chiaki Konaka scripted MAREBITO; U.S. audiences shouldn't have to wait long to see it, as Variety reports that Britain's Tartan Films has picked up the movie for both U.S. and UK release. —Michael Gingold"

Actualmente Takashi Shimizu se encuentra rodando la versión americana de La Maldición, aunque abandonará el rodaje de La Maldición 2 versión americana (que va a rodar Sam Raimi) para concentrarse en la tercera parte de La Maldición.
