According to developer Neversoft, creators of the smash-hit Tony Hawk series, there will be no online component in the upcoming PlayStation 3 version of Tony Hawk's Project 8, which is currently scheduled as a launch title.

After a recent visit to LA for some hands-on time with the Xbox 360 version of Tony Hawk's Project 8, IGN's Doug Perry revealed that Tony Hawk developer Neversoft is "confident the PS3 version of the game will ship at launch in November," but that the online component won't be included in the PS3 version because the developer "still hasn't received all of the software libraries and has no indication of how the online components will work on PS3."

GamePro was also on the scene at Neversoft, and it's true -- we asked the same question and got the same response. Other PS3 developers we've met with have shared a similar response to queries about online PS3 play at launch.

GamePro's hands-on with Tony Hawk's Project 8 for the Xbox 360 reveals how the online component plays a key role in the upcoming title, pitting players globally against one another for the top spot as the best Tony Hawk player in the world. Unfortunately, we now know that this feature won't be available in the PS3 version, at least at launch -- it's theoretically possible that the developer could add online functionality to the PS3 version via a download, though no plans have been announced.

Neversoft was the first developer to offer online play for the PlayStation 2 with Tony Hawk 3. Is Sony hiding crucial information about its PS3 online service to throw off the competition, or is the service still in early planning stages?
